SECURITY / SMALL TEAMS

the 20-minute security checklist for a 10-person office.

Small teams rarely need more security theatre. They need a few important things checked properly and kept in good order.

If you only have 20 minutes, spend them on the places where small offices most often get caught out: accounts, access, backups, and the quiet things no one notices until something goes wrong.

1. make sure MFA is on for the accounts that matter

Email, Microsoft 365, domain registrar access, payment tools, website admin, and any remote-access tools should all have multi-factor authentication enabled. If there is only time for one thing, start here.

2. separate admin access from everyday use

People should not be doing ordinary daily work from all-powerful admin accounts. That is how small mistakes become bigger incidents.

3. check that backups are not just present, but believable

A backup that no one understands or has not checked recently is not much comfort. Make sure someone knows where it is, what it covers, and how recovery would work.

4. remove old access

Former staff, abandoned vendors, and forgotten accounts tend to linger. Cleaning those up is simple and often overdue.

5. know who owns the essentials

Your domain, email, website, and store accounts should be owned by the business, not a former freelancer or somebody's personal login.

The useful version of security is not dramatic. It is clear ownership, sensible habits, and a few important controls that stay in place.

If something here sounds familiar, Better Desk can help you get it in good order.
